now well into its second decade, san francisco's beloved noise
pop festival needs little help filling the clubs for its annual weeklong
concert series, which runs from 2/25 - 3/2. this year's early sellouts
include bills featuring stephen
malkmus & the jicks, cat
power, the
donnas, and tortoise.
in recent years, organizers have added a film series. this year's screenings
include "if
i should fall from grace: the shane macgowan story," an in-depth
look at the former lead singer of the great trad-punk irish group the
pogues.
the film is preceded by "hurt,"
the startling new video of johnny
cash singing nine
inch nails. directed by mark romanek ("one
hour photo"), the footage is unflinching in its depiction of
cash at 71 -- incredibly frail, a wisp of his granite image. detractors
of music videos need only watch these four minutes to see how affecting
the form can be.
